People have developed home grown systems over the years for making and maintaining league and tournament schedules. Excel, anyone? While Excel allows you to have information arranged on a nice grid, there is really no way to organize that information. So you end up with strange codes for games and teams, and when you make a change, you need to search every spreadsheet to make sure the change is reflected everywhere. In more recent years with the advent of the web, people have figured out ways to get the “final” schedule up on their website. For very enterprising volunteers, even referee assignments sometimes show up on the site. But when games need to be re-scheduled, or referees re-assigned, then not only do the spreadsheets need to be carefully updated, but so does the website.
